But currently, UK law has no power to require those foreign officials, who are suspected to be corrupt, to explain their sources of wealth. The lack of available hard evidence upon which to base prosecution of corrupt public officials is a familiar complaint among law enforcement agencies internationally. The need for hard evidence against corrupt public officials is a major obstacle to UK authorities as well. Chief among these is the introduction of an Unexplained Wealth Order ("UWO") aimed directly at corrupt foreign public officials. But it ought to go some way to dampening the use of the UK as a safe haven for corrupt officials to stash their ill-gotten gains.
